What Is Benchmark MA.5.NSO.2.2?

In Grade 5, students divide whole numbers up to five digits by two-digit numbers, such as 1,476 ÷ 12, including with the standard algorithm.

When a division does not come out evenly, Grade 5 students write the remainder as a fraction: the remainder over the divisor, such as 56 R5 = 56515 = 5613.

Official benchmarkDivide multi-digit whole numbers, up to five digits by two digits, including using a standard algorithm with procedural fluency. Represent remainders as fractions.

On the FAST test: part of the Grade 5 reporting category Number Sense and Operations with Whole Numbers, which is about 23–29% of the test.

Worked Examples

Worked Example 1

Dividing Evenly

1,476 ÷ 12
  1. 112 goes into 14 once: 1 × 12 = 12, remainder 2.
  2. 2Bring down 7: 27 ÷ 12 = 2, remainder 3.
  3. 3Bring down 6: 36 ÷ 12 = 3, remainder 0.
  4. 4Check: 123 × 12 = 1,476.
Answer: 123

Worked Example 2

Remainder as a Fraction

845 ÷ 15
  1. 115 × 56 = 840.
  2. 2845 − 840 = 5, so the remainder is 5.
  3. 3Write it as a fraction of the divisor: 515 = 13.
Answer: 5613

Common Mistakes to Watch For

Skipping a zero in the quotient

Wrong:1,236 ÷ 12 = 13

After 12 ÷ 12 = 1, bring down 3: 12 does not go into 3, so write 0 in the quotient. The answer is 103.

Writing the remainder over the wrong number

Wrong:845 ÷ 15 = 565845

The fraction is remainder ÷ divisor: 515 = 13.

Helpful Math Tip

Always check with multiplication: quotient × divisor + remainder should equal the number you divided.
