In Grade 5, students learn that a fraction is also a division: 34 means 3 ÷ 4. If 3 pizzas are shared equally by 4 people, each person gets 34 of a pizza.
The number being shared (the dividend) becomes the numerator, and the number of equal shares (the divisor) becomes the denominator.
Official benchmarkGiven a mathematical or real-world problem, represent the division of two whole numbers as a fraction.
On the FAST test: part of the Grade 5 reporting category Number Sense and Operations with Fractions and Decimals, which is about 23–29% of the test.
Worked Example 1
Worked Example 2
The number being divided goes on top: 3 ÷ 4 = 34. Each person gets less than 1 whole pizza.
2 ÷ 5 = 25. Sharing 2 things among 5 people gives each person 25.
Picture sharing real objects. If there are fewer things than people, each person gets less than 1, so the answer is a fraction less than 1.
