What Is Benchmark MA.4.NSO.2.5?

Students explore multiplying and dividing multi-digit numbers using estimation, rounding, and place value. For division, dividends have up to four digits and divisors up to two digits.

Round to numbers that are easy to work with. For example, 1,380 ÷ 27 is about 1,500 ÷ 30, and 150 tens ÷ 3 tens is 50.

Official benchmarkExplore the multiplication and division of multi-digit whole numbers using estimation, rounding and place value.

Worked Examples

Worked Example 1

Estimating a Product

Estimate 389 × 52.
  1. 1Round 389 to 400 and 52 to 50.
  2. 24 × 5 = 20, so 400 × 50 = 20,000
Answer: About 20,000

Worked Example 2

Estimating a Quotient

Estimate 2,380 ÷ 61.
  1. 1Round 61 to 60. Choose a nearby number that 60 divides easily: 2,400.
  2. 22,400 ÷ 60 is 240 tens ÷ 6 tens = 40
Answer: About 40

Common Mistakes to Watch For

Losing track of zeros

Wrong:400 × 50 = 2,000

4 × 5 = 20, and there are three zeros in 400 and 50 together: 400 × 50 = 20,000.

Rounding to numbers that are hard to divide

Wrong:2,380 ÷ 61 ≈ 2,000 ÷ 60

Pick compatible numbers that divide evenly: 2,400 ÷ 60 = 40.

Helpful Math Tip

Before solving any multiplication or division problem, ask your child for a quick estimate. It's a great way to catch big mistakes.
