What Is Benchmark MA.4.NSO.2.2?

Students multiply a whole number with up to three digits by a whole number with up to two digits, using a method they can use reliably.

Area models and partial products break the problem apart by place value using the distributive property. Each part is easy to multiply, and the parts are added at the end.

Official benchmarkMultiply two whole numbers, up to three digits by up to two digits, with procedural reliability.

On the FAST test: part of the Grade 4 reporting category Number Sense and Operations with Whole Numbers, which is about 31–37% of the test.

Worked Examples

Worked Example 1

Area Model

243 × 15
  1. 1Split 15 into 10 + 5.
  2. 2243 × 10 = 2,430
  3. 3243 × 5 = 1,215
  4. 42,430 + 1,215 = 3,645
Answer: 3,645

Worked Example 2

Partial Products

128 × 23
  1. 1128 × 20 = 2,560
  2. 2128 × 3 = 384
  3. 32,560 + 384 = 2,944
Answer: 2,944

Common Mistakes to Watch For

Forgetting a partial product

Wrong:128 × 23 = 2,560 + 24 = 2,584

Multiply all of 128 by 3, not just the 8: 128 × 3 = 384. Then 2,560 + 384 = 2,944.

Treating the tens digit as ones

Wrong:243 × 15: 243 × 1 = 243, and 243 + 1,215 = 1,458

The 1 in 15 means 1 ten, so multiply 243 × 10 = 2,430. The product is 3,645.

Helpful Math Tip

Estimate first (243 × 15 is about 250 × 15, or 3,750) so your child can tell if the final answer is reasonable.
