Worked Examples

Worked Example 1

Distance With Fractions

Lin rides 3 laps of a 34-mile trail, then walks 24 mile. How far does she go in all?
  1. 1Riding: 3 × 34 = 94
  2. 2Add the walk: 94 + 24 = 114
Answer: 114 miles

Worked Example 2

Time Interval

A movie is 1 hour 50 minutes long. It starts at 6:45 p.m. When does it end?
  1. 1Add 1 hour: 6:45 becomes 7:45.
  2. 2Add 50 minutes: 15 minutes gets to 8:00, and 35 more minutes is 8:35.
Answer: 8:35 p.m.

Common Mistakes to Watch For

Treating an hour like 100 minutes

Wrong:6:45 + 1 hour 50 minutes = 7:95

There are 60 minutes in an hour. 7:45 + 50 minutes is 8:35.

Stopping after the first step

Wrong:Lin went 94 miles.

94 miles is only the riding. Add the walk: 114 miles.

Helpful Math Tip

For time problems, draw a number line marked with hours. Jump to the next full hour first, then add the rest.
