What Is Benchmark MA.4.AR.1.3?

Students solve real-world problems that multiply a fraction by a whole number, or a whole number by a fraction, and write stories to match equations. Fractions are less than one.

For example, if a cup holds 25 pound of soil and Ken uses 8 cups, he uses 8 × 25 = 165 pounds. Answers do not need to be simplified.

Official benchmarkSolve real-world problems involving multiplication of a fraction by a whole number or a whole number by a fraction.

On the FAST test: part of the Grade 4 reporting category Number Sense and Operations with Fractions and Decimals, which is about 31–37% of the test.

Worked Examples

Worked Example 1

Equal Groups of a Fraction

A recipe uses 23 cup of flour per batch. How much flour is needed for 5 batches?
  1. 15 groups of 23: 5 × 23 = 103
Answer: 103 cups

Worked Example 2

A Fraction of a Group

15 of the 30 students in a class ride bikes to school. How many students ride bikes?
  1. 1Split 30 into 5 equal groups: each group is 6.
  2. 215 × 30 = 6
Answer: 6 students

Common Mistakes to Watch For

Multiplying the denominator

Wrong:5 × 23 = 1015

5 groups of 2 thirds is 10 thirds: 103 cups.

Multiplying by the denominator instead of finding a part

Wrong:15 of 30 is 30 × 5 = 150.

One fifth of 30 is one of 5 equal groups: 30 ÷ 5 = 6.

Helpful Math Tip

Act it out with measuring cups: fill a 13 cup several times and count how many thirds you used.
