What Is Benchmark MA.4.FR.2.4?

Students explore multiplying a fraction by a whole number, or a whole number by a fraction, using models and number lines. The fractions are less than one.

8 × 14 means 8 groups of 14, which is 84, or 2. And 14 × 8 means one fourth of 8, which is also 2 (the commutative property). Answers do not need to be simplified.

Official benchmarkExtend previous understanding of multiplication to explore the multiplication of a fraction by a whole number or a whole number by a fraction.

On the FAST test: part of the Grade 4 reporting category Number Sense and Operations with Fractions and Decimals, which is about 31–37% of the test.

Worked Examples

Worked Example 1

Whole Number Times a Fraction

5 × 23
  1. 15 groups of 23 is 5 × 2 = 10 thirds.
  2. 25 × 23 = 103
Answer: 103

Worked Example 2

A Fraction of a Whole Number

13 × 12
  1. 1Split 12 into 3 equal groups.
  2. 2Each group has 4.
Answer: 4

Common Mistakes to Watch For

Multiplying the denominator too

Wrong:4 × 25 = 820

4 groups of 2 fifths is 8 fifths. Only the numerator is multiplied: 4 × 25 = 85.

Thinking multiplying always makes a bigger number

Wrong:12 × 10 is more than 10.

Half of 10 is 5. Multiplying by a fraction less than 1 gives less than the whole number.

Helpful Math Tip

Draw groups: for 5 × 23, draw 5 circles each split into thirds, shade 2 thirds in each, and count the shaded thirds.
