Students convert measurements within one system: yards, feet, and inches; kilometers, meters, centimeters, and millimeters; pounds and ounces; kilograms and grams; gallons, quarts, pints, and cups; liters and milliliters; hours, minutes, and seconds.
To go from a larger unit to a smaller one, multiply (1 foot = 12 inches, so 4 feet = 48 inches). To go from smaller to larger, divide. In Grade 4, students do not convert grams to kilograms, meters to kilometers, or milliliters to liters.
Official benchmarkConvert within a single system of measurement using the units: yards, feet, inches; kilometers, meters, centimeters, millimeters; pounds, ounces; kilograms, grams; gallons, quarts, pints, cups; liter, milliliter; and hours, minutes, seconds.
On the FAST test: part of the Grade 4 reporting category Geometric Reasoning, Measurement, and Data Analysis and Probability, which is about 31–37% of the test.
Worked Example 1
Worked Example 2
Inches are smaller, so there are more of them. Multiply: 4 × 12 = 48 inches.
1 hour = 60 minutes, so 2 hours = 120 minutes.
Make a small chart of key facts (12 inches in a foot, 3 feet in a yard, 16 ounces in a pound, 4 quarts in a gallon, 60 minutes in an hour) and keep it handy.
