What Is Benchmark MA.4.DP.1.3?

Students solve real-world problems using numerical data with any of the four operations. Data can include fractions with like denominators (including fractions greater than one) and decimals to the hundredths.

For example, from a line plot of a team's hat sizes, students might find what fraction of the team has a head size smaller than 20 inches.

On the FAST test: part of the Grade 4 reporting category Geometric Reasoning, Measurement, and Data Analysis and Probability, which is about 31–37% of the test.

Worked Examples

Worked Example 1

Fraction of a Data Set

A line plot shows the hat sizes of 10 players. 3 players have a head size smaller than 20 inches. What fraction of the team is that?
  1. 1The whole is the team: 10 players.
  2. 23 out of 10 is 310.
Answer: 310 of the team

Worked Example 2

Adding Decimal Data

Rainfall was 1.25 inches on Monday, 0.8 inch on Tuesday, and 2.05 inches on Wednesday. What was the total?
  1. 1Line up the decimal points: 1.25 + 0.80 + 2.05
  2. 21.25 + 0.8 + 2.05 = 4.1
Answer: 4.1 inches

Common Mistakes to Watch For

Using the wrong whole

Wrong:3 players are smaller and 7 are not, so the fraction is 37.

Compare with the whole team of 10: 310.

Lining up decimals by the last digit

Wrong:1.25 + 0.8 = 1.33

Line up the decimal points: 1.25 + 0.80 = 2.05.

Helpful Math Tip

Ask questions about real data: "What fraction of our week was rainy?" or "How much more did it rain on Monday than Tuesday?"
