Worked Example 1
All Three Measures
- 1Mode: 15 appears twice, more than any other value.
- 2Median: the data are in order; the middle (4th) value is 18.
- 3Range: 25 − 12 = 13

Students find the mode, median, and range of numerical data, including fractions, shown in tables, stem-and-leaf plots, or line plots.
Mode: the value that appears most often (a data set can have one mode, more than one, or none). Median: the middle value when the data are in order (Grade 4 data sets for the median have an odd number of values). Range: the largest value minus the smallest value.
Official benchmarkDetermine the mode, median or range to interpret numerical data including fractional values, represented with tables, stem-and-leaf plots or line plots.
On the FAST test: part of the Grade 4 reporting category Geometric Reasoning, Measurement, and Data Analysis and Probability, which is about 31–37% of the test.
Worked Example 1
Worked Example 2
Order the data first: 2, 4, 5, 7, 9. The median is 5.
Range is the difference between the largest and smallest values: 25 − 12 = 13.
Write the data on small cards and line them up in order. The middle card is the median.
