What Is Benchmark MA.3.NSO.1.3?

Students plot whole numbers up to 10,000 on number lines scaled by 50s, 100s, or 1,000s, put numbers in order, and compare them using <, >, and =.

To compare, start with the greatest place value. If the thousands are the same, compare the hundreds, then the tens, then the ones.

Official benchmarkPlot, order and compare whole numbers up to 10,000.

On the FAST test: part of the Grade 3 reporting category Number Sense and Additive Reasoning, which is about 23–29% of the test.

Worked Examples

Worked Example 1

Compare Using Place Value

Compare 4,743 and 4,753 using <, > or =.
  1. 1Thousands: both have 4. Hundreds: both have 7.
  2. 2Tens: 4 tens is less than 5 tens.
  3. 3So 4,743 is less than 4,753.
Answer: 4,743 < 4,753

Worked Example 2

Plotting on a Number Line

A number line from 2,000 to 3,000 has a mark every 100. Where does 2,650 go?
  1. 12,650 is between the marks for 2,600 and 2,700.
  2. 22,650 is 50 more than 2,600 and 50 less than 2,700, so it is halfway between them.
Answer: Halfway between 2,600 and 2,700

Common Mistakes to Watch For

Comparing the ones digits first

Wrong:5,098 > 5,190 because 8 > 0

The thousands are the same, so compare the hundreds: 0 hundreds is less than 1 hundred. 5,098 < 5,190.

Looking only at the first digit

Wrong:987 > 1,002 because 9 > 1

1,002 has 1 thousand and 987 has none. 987 < 1,002.

Helpful Math Tip

Line the numbers up so their place values match, one under the other. Then compare column by column from the left.
