Worked Examples

Worked Example 1

Standard Form to Expanded and Word Form

Write 4,067 in expanded form and in word form.
  1. 1The 4 is in the thousands place: 4,000.
  2. 2The 0 means there are no hundreds.
  3. 3The 6 is in the tens place: 60. The 7 is in the ones place: 7.
  4. 4Expanded form: 4,000 + 60 + 7
Answer: 4,000 + 60 + 7; four thousand sixty-seven

Worked Example 2

Word Form to Standard Form

Write eight thousand three hundred five in standard form.
  1. 1Eight thousand is 8,000. Three hundred is 300. Five is 5.
  2. 2There are no tens, so the tens digit is 0.
  3. 38,000 + 300 + 5 = 8,305
Answer: 8,305

Common Mistakes to Watch For

Leaving out a zero

Wrong:three thousand forty = 340

Three thousand needs four digits. There are no hundreds and no ones: 3,040.

Giving a digit the wrong place value

Wrong:6,203 = 6,000 + 200 + 30

The 3 is in the ones place, so it is worth 3: 6,203 = 6,000 + 200 + 3.

Helpful Math Tip

Use a place value chart with thousands, hundreds, tens, and ones. Writing each digit in its own column makes missing places (zeros) easy to see.
