What Is Benchmark MA.3.NSO.1.4?

Students round whole numbers from 0 to 1,000 to the nearest 10 or the nearest 100. Rounding gives a number that is easier to use and close to the original.

To round to the nearest 10, look at the ones digit. To round to the nearest 100, look at the tens digit. If that digit is 5 or more, round up; if it is less than 5, round down.

Official benchmarkRound whole numbers from 0 to 1,000 to the nearest 10 or 100.

On the FAST test: part of the Grade 3 reporting category Number Sense and Additive Reasoning, which is about 23–29% of the test.

Common Mistakes to Watch For

Rounding in steps

Wrong:449 → 450 → 500

Round in one step. To the nearest 100, look at the tens digit: 4 tens, so 449 rounds to 400.

Changing too many digits to zero

Wrong:382 rounded to the nearest 10 is 300

To the nearest 10, keep the hundreds and the tens: 382 rounds to 380.

Helpful Math Tip

Sketch a number line with the two possible answers at the ends and the halfway point in the middle. Ask, "Which end is the number closer to?"
