Students plot numbers up to 1,000 on a number line, put them in order, and compare them using words (less than, greater than, between, equal to) and symbols (<, >, =).
To compare, start with the biggest place. Look at the hundreds first; if they are the same, look at the tens, and then the ones.
Official benchmarkPlot, order and compare whole numbers up to 1,000.
How it is tested: Grade 2 students take FAST Star Math, Florida's math test for Kindergarten through Grade 2.
Worked Example 1
Worked Example 2
Start with the hundreds: 3 hundreds is less than 4 hundreds, so 319 < 401.
The open side of the symbol faces the greater number: 520 > 250, or 250 < 520.
Say the symbol out loud while reading left to right: "583 is greater than 538." The wide, open side of < or > always faces the bigger number.
