What Is Benchmark MA.2.NSO.1.4?

Rounding gives a number that is close in value but easier to use. In Grade 2, students round whole numbers from 0 to 100 to the nearest 10.

Find the two tens the number is between, then decide which one it is closer to. A number that ends in 5 is exactly in the middle, and it rounds up.

Official benchmarkRound whole numbers from 0 to 100 to the nearest 10.

How it is tested: Grade 2 students take FAST Star Math, Florida's math test for Kindergarten through Grade 2.

Worked Examples

Worked Example 1

Round 43 to the Nearest 10

Round 43 to the nearest 10.
  1. 143 is between 40 and 50.
  2. 243 is 3 away from 40 and 7 away from 50.
  3. 3It is closer to 40.
Answer: 40

Worked Example 2

A Number Ending in 5

Round 65 to the nearest 10.

  2. 2It is exactly halfway: 5 away from each.
  3. 3When a number is halfway, round up.
Answer: 70

Common Mistakes to Watch For

Rounding down when the ones digit is 5

Wrong:85 rounds to 80

85 is halfway between 80 and 90, and halfway numbers round up: 85 rounds to 90.

Picking the closer ten the wrong way

Wrong:37 rounds to 30

37 is 3 away from 40 and 7 away from 30. It is closer to 40, so it rounds to 40.

Helpful Math Tip

Draw a short number line from one ten to the next (like 30 to 40) and mark the middle (35). Where the number lands shows which ten it rounds to.
