What Is Benchmark MA.2.NSO.1.1?

In Grade 2, students read and write numbers from 0 to 1,000 in three ways: standard form (413), expanded form (400 + 10 + 3), and word form (four hundred thirteen).

Zeros are the tricky part. In 709 there are no tens, so the expanded form is 700 + 9 and the word form is seven hundred nine.

Official benchmarkRead and write numbers from 0 to 1,000 using standard form, expanded form and word form.

How it is tested: Grade 2 students take FAST Star Math, Florida's math test for Kindergarten through Grade 2.

Worked Examples

Worked Example 1

Standard Form to Expanded Form

Write 586 in expanded form.
  1. 1The 5 is in the hundreds place, so it is worth 500.
  2. 2The 8 is in the tens place, so it is worth 80.
  3. 3The 6 is in the ones place, so it is worth 6.
  4. 4Write the values with plus signs between them.
Answer: 500 + 80 + 6

Worked Example 2

Word Form to Standard Form

Write six hundred forty in standard form.
  1. 1Six hundred is 600.
  2. 2Forty is 40.
  3. 3There are no ones, so the ones digit is 0.
  4. 4600 + 40 = 640
Answer: 640

Common Mistakes to Watch For

Leaving out a zero

Wrong:seven hundred nine = 79

Seven hundred needs three digits. There are no tens, so put a 0 in the tens place: 709.

Writing digits instead of their values in expanded form

Wrong:352 = 3 + 5 + 2

Each digit is worth an amount based on its place: 352 = 300 + 50 + 2.

Helpful Math Tip

Have your child read numbers aloud while pointing to each digit and saying its place: "3 hundreds, 5 tens, 2 ones." Then write the same number all three ways.
