In Grade 1, the missing number is shown with a box (□) or a question mark, not a letter. Sums are up to 20.
Official benchmarkDetermine the unknown whole number in an addition or subtraction equation, relating three whole numbers, with the unknown in any position.
How it is tested: Grade 1 students take FAST Star Math, Florida's math test for Kindergarten through Grade 2.
Worked Example 1
Worked Example 2
Take 4 away from the missing number and you get 8, so the missing number is 8 + 4 = 12.
Read it as "□ + 5 is the same as 17." 12 + 5 = 17, so □ = 12.
Put the number back in the box and check that both sides match.
