Children decide whether an addition or subtraction equation is true or false and explain why. Equations have no more than four numbers, with sums up to 20.
The equal sign means "is the same as." So 8 = 8 and 5 + 2 = 2 + 5 are true, even though they don't look like 3 + 4 = 7.
Official benchmarkDetermine and explain if equations involving addition or subtraction are true or false.
How it is tested: Grade 1 students take FAST Star Math, Florida's math test for Kindergarten through Grade 2.
Worked Example 1
Worked Example 2
The equal sign means "is the same as." 8 is the same as 8, so 8 = 8 is true.
Both sides have the same value: 4 + 2 is 6. The equation 6 = 4 + 2 is true.
Use a balance scale or a seesaw picture: an equation is true only when both sides weigh the same.
