Children add two numbers with sums up to 20 and subtract using related facts. The goal is a method your child understands and can use correctly every time.
Helpful strategies: making a ten (9 + 6 = 9 + 1 + 5), doubles (6 + 6), and thinking of subtraction as a missing addend. Problems include adding to, putting together, taking from, and comparing.
Official benchmarkAdd two whole numbers with sums from 0 to 20, and subtract using related facts with procedural reliability.
How it is tested: Grade 1 students take FAST Star Math, Florida's math test for Kindergarten through Grade 2.

Worked Example 2
Make a ten: 8 + 2 = 10, and 3 more is 13. So 8 + 5 = 13.
Think addition: 6 + 8 = 14, so 14 − 6 = 8.
Use a ten-frame (an egg carton with 2 cups cut off works) to show making a ten. Ask your child to explain the strategy they used.
Help your child build math confidence with original interactive questions aligned with Florida's B.E.S.T. Mathematics Standards.
