What Is Benchmark MA.1.AR.1.1?

Children add three or more numbers with sums up to 20. They learn that they can change the order or the grouping of the numbers without changing the sum.

A smart move is to look for two numbers that make 10 and add those first. Children do not need to name the properties or use parentheses.

Official benchmarkApply properties of addition to find a sum of three or more whole numbers.

How it is tested: Grade 1 students take FAST Star Math, Florida's math test for Kindergarten through Grade 2.

Worked Examples

Worked Example 1

Find a Ten First

6 + 5 + 4
  1. 16 and 4 make 10: 6 + 4 = 10
  2. 2Then add the 5: 10 + 5 = 15
Answer: 15

Worked Example 2

Four Numbers

3 + 9 + 1 + 4
  1. 19 and 1 make 10: 9 + 1 = 10
  2. 2Then add 3 and 4: 10 + 3 + 4 = 17
Answer: 17

Common Mistakes to Watch For

Thinking a different order gives a different sum

Wrong:2 + 5 + 8 and 8 + 5 + 2 have different answers.

You can add in any order. Both are 15.

Leaving out one of the numbers

Wrong:7 + 3 + 6 = 10

7 + 3 = 10, then add the 6: 10 + 6 = 16.

Helpful Math Tip

Roll three dice (or draw three number cards) and ask your child to find the total, starting with any pair that makes 10 or a double.
