Children learn that every subtraction problem can be turned into an addition problem with a missing number. For example, 12 − 7 = ? can be written as 7 + ? = 12, and since 7 + 5 = 12, the answer is 5.
Sums are up to 20. This connection makes subtraction facts much easier to remember.
Official benchmarkRestate a subtraction problem as a missing addend problem using the relationship between addition and subtraction.
How it is tested: Grade 1 students take FAST Star Math, Florida's math test for Kindergarten through Grade 2.
Worked Example 1
Worked Example 2
Keep the total (12) by itself: 7 + ? = 12.
The missing number plus 7 must make 12: 7 + 5 = 12, so ? = 5.
When your child is stuck on a subtraction fact, ask, "What do you add to the smaller number to get the bigger one?"
