FAST stands for Florida Assessment of Student Thinking. It is Florida's statewide test for reading and math. In math, students in Grades 3–8 take FAST Mathematics three times a year, and students in Kindergarten–Grade 2 take Star Math.
Each test covers the full year of math for the grade, based on Florida's B.E.S.T. Mathematics Standards. It is taken on a computer and adjusts to how your child answers.
| Grades | Questions | Scheduled Time | Calculator |
|---|---|---|---|
| Grades 3–5 | 35–40 questions | Up to 80 min (PM1, PM2) · up to 100 min (PM3) | No calculator |
| Grades 6–8 | 36–40 questions | Up to 100 min (PM1, PM2) · up to 120 min (PM3) | Built-in calculator on some questions |
Students still working at the end of the session may be given more time, up to the end of the school day. Scratch paper is provided, and Grades 4–8 have an online reference sheet.

Students take FAST three times a year, called progress monitoring periods. These are the statewide windows for Grades 3–8; each school picks its own testing days inside them.

What each PM period means for your childThe test is organized into reporting categories. These are the same categories you see on your child's score report, with the share of the test each one covers.

Yes. The test adjusts the difficulty of questions based on how your child answers, while still covering the full grade-level content. Students in the same grade may see different questions.
That is why memorizing questions does not help. What helps is understanding the skills for the grade and being comfortable with the question types.
Start with your child's score report: the reporting categories show which areas are below the standard. Talk with the teacher, then practice those skills a little at a time.
FastChomp offers interactive math practice for Grades 1–6, aligned with Florida's B.E.S.T. Mathematics Standards. Parents can track progress by benchmark and identify skills that need additional practice.
Frequently Asked Questions
Sessions have scheduled lengths, but there is no strict cutoff. Grades 3–5 are scheduled for up to 80 minutes at PM1 and PM2 and up to 100 minutes at PM3. Grades 6–8 are scheduled for up to 100 and 120 minutes. Students still actively working may be given the time they need, up to the end of the school day.
About 35–40 questions in Grades 3–5 and 36–40 in Grades 6–8. At PM3, a few of these are field-test questions that do not count toward the score.
No. FAST Mathematics is adaptive: the questions adjust based on how a student answers, so students in the same grade may see different questions.
Not in Grades 3–5. In Grades 6–8, students use the calculator built into the test on some questions. Grades 4–8 also have an online math reference sheet.
Results reach schools within about a day of testing. Families see results in the Florida Statewide Assessments Family Portal, using access information from their school or district.
