What Are the Florida B.E.S.T. Mathematics Standards?

B.E.S.T. stands for Benchmarks for Excellent Student Thinking. The B.E.S.T. Mathematics Standards describe the math skills Florida students are expected to learn in each grade.

Florida adopted B.E.S.T. in 2020, and the math standards have been used in classrooms since the 2022–23 school year. They replaced Florida's previous standards, which were based on Common Core.

For parents, the standards answer a simple question: what should my child be able to do in math by the end of this grade?

How Are Florida Math Standards Organized?

Florida organizes math expectations in four layers, from broad to specific.

Grade Level

The grade the expectation is written for, such as Grade 5.

Strand

A broad area of math, such as Number Sense and Operations or Fractions.

Standard

A learning goal inside a strand that groups related benchmarks.

Benchmark

One specific skill students are expected to learn. This is the level FAST Math is built around.

Many benchmarks also include clarifications, short notes that explain exactly what the skill includes, such as which numbers or problem types are covered.

How to Read a Florida Math Benchmark Code

Every benchmark has a code. Teachers, report cards, and practice materials often use these codes to name a specific skill.

Example: Grade 5 Fractions

MA.5.FR.2.1

Add and subtract fractions with unlike denominators, including mixed numbers and fractions greater than 1.

The Math Strands

CodeStrand
NSONumber Sense and Operations
FRFractions
ARAlgebraic Reasoning
MMeasurement
GRGeometric Reasoning
DPData Analysis and Probability

Not every strand appears in every grade. For example, Grade 6 covers fractions within Number Sense and Operations.

Mathematical Thinking and Reasoning (MTR) Standards

Alongside the grade-level benchmarks, Florida has seven MTR standards that apply in every grade. They describe how students should think and work in math, not a specific topic. In short, students should:

  1. 1Actively participate in effortful learning, individually and with others.
  2. 2Show understanding by representing problems in more than one way.
  3. 3Complete tasks with mathematical fluency.
  4. 4Talk about mathematical thinking and respond to the thinking of others.
  5. 5Use patterns and structure to understand connections.
  6. 6Check whether answers and solutions make sense.
  7. 7Apply math to real-world situations.

At home, asking "How do you know?" or "Does that answer make sense?" builds exactly these habits.

Florida Math Standards by Grade

A few of the main topics in each grade. These highlight key areas rather than every benchmark.

Grade 2

Place value to 1,000, addition and subtraction, time, money, and early fractions.

Grade 3

Multiplication and division, fractions, area, perimeter, and problem-solving.

Grade 4

Multi-digit operations, fraction equivalence and operations, decimals, angles, and measurement.

Grade 6

Ratios, rational numbers, expressions and equations, geometry, and statistics.

How Do B.E.S.T. Standards Relate to FAST Math?

FAST Mathematics in Grades 3–8 measures the B.E.S.T. benchmarks for each grade. The official test blueprint lists the benchmarks assessed and groups them into reporting categories, which are the areas you see on your child's score report.

FAST Math is adaptive, so each student sees a different set of questions. Building real understanding of the benchmarks works better than memorizing test questions.

How Can Parents Practice Florida Math Standards at Home?

You don't need to memorize benchmark codes to help. What matters is practicing the right skills for your child's grade, a little at a time.

FastChomp offers interactive math practice for Grades 1–6, aligned with Florida's B.E.S.T. Mathematics Standards. Your child answers interactive questions with instant feedback, while you can track progress by benchmark and identify skills that need additional practice.

Frequently Asked Questions

Florida B.E.S.T. Math Standards FAQ

What does B.E.S.T. stand for in Florida?

B.E.S.T. stands for Benchmarks for Excellent Student Thinking. Florida's B.E.S.T. Mathematics Standards describe what students are expected to learn in math at each grade level.

Are Florida B.E.S.T. Math Standards the same as Common Core?

No. Florida adopted its own B.E.S.T. Standards in 2020 to replace its previous standards, which were based on Common Core. B.E.S.T. math has been taught in Florida classrooms since the 2022–23 school year.

What do NSO, FR, AR, M, GR, and DP mean?

They are the strands, or broad areas of math: Number Sense and Operations (NSO), Fractions (FR), Algebraic Reasoning (AR), Measurement (M), Geometric Reasoning (GR), and Data Analysis and Probability (DP). Not every strand appears in every grade.

Are FAST Math tests based on B.E.S.T. Standards?

Yes. FAST Mathematics in Grades 3–8 measures the B.E.S.T. benchmarks for each grade. The Florida Department of Education publishes a test blueprint that lists the benchmarks assessed and how much of the test each reporting category covers.

What are benchmark clarifications?

Clarifications are notes attached to a benchmark that explain its scope, such as which numbers or types of problems are included. They help teachers and families understand exactly what a skill covers.

Where can I look up a specific benchmark?

CPALMS, Florida's official standards site, has a page for every benchmark with its full wording, clarifications, and examples. You can search by the benchmark code, such as MA.5.FR.2.1.
