What Is Benchmark MA.6.GR.2.3?

Students find the volume of right rectangular prisms with positive rational edge lengths (including fractions and decimals) using visual models and the formula V = length × width × height.

They also find a missing dimension when the volume is known. Volume is measured in cubic units.

Official benchmarkSolve mathematical and real-world problems involving the volume of right rectangular prisms with positive rational number edge lengths using a visual model and a formula.

On the FAST test: part of the Grade 6 reporting category Geometric Reasoning, Data Analysis, and Probability, which is about 25–36% of the test.

Worked Examples

Worked Example 1

Decimal Edges

A box is 4 cm long, 2.5 cm wide, and 3 cm high. Find its volume.
  1. 1V = 4 × 2.5 × 3
  2. 24 × 2.5 × 3 = 30
Answer: 30 cubic centimeters

Worked Example 2

Missing Dimension

A box has a volume of 60 cubic inches. It is 5 inches long and 4 inches wide. How tall is it?
  1. 15 × 4 × h = 60, so 20 × h = 60
  2. 260 ÷ 20 = 3
Answer: 3 inches

Common Mistakes to Watch For

Adding the edge lengths

Wrong:4 + 2.5 + 3 = 9.5 cubic cm

Volume multiplies the three dimensions: 4 × 2.5 × 3 = 30 cubic cm.

Using square units

Wrong:The volume is 30 square centimeters.

Volume fills space, so it is in cubic units: 30 cubic centimeters.

Helpful Math Tip

Fill a small box with sugar cubes or blocks, then compare the count with length × width × height.
