Worked Example 1
Multiplying Decimals
- 1Multiply as whole numbers: 375 × 24 = 9,000
- 2The factors have 2 + 1 = 3 decimal places, so the product has 3: 9.000
- 33.75 × 2.4 = 9

Students multiply and divide positive decimals to the thousandths with procedural fluency, including the standard algorithms. The numbers have no more than 5 digits in total.
To multiply, multiply as whole numbers and then place the decimal point: the product has as many decimal places as the factors combined. To divide by a decimal, multiply both numbers by 10, 100, or 1,000 so the divisor is a whole number.
Official benchmarkMultiply and divide positive multi-digit numbers with decimals to the thousandths, including using a standard algorithm with procedural fluency.
On the FAST test: part of the Grade 6 reporting category Number Sense and Operations, which is about 33–42% of the test.
Worked Example 1
Worked Example 2
12 × 3 = 36, and there are 2 decimal places in all: 1.2 × 0.3 = 0.36.
Multiply both numbers by 10: 48 ÷ 4 = 12.
Estimate first: 3.75 × 2.4 is about 4 × 2 = 8, so an answer of 0.9 or 90 can't be right.
