Worked Example 1
Perimeter and Area
- 1Length: from x = −3 to x = 4 is |−3| + |4| = 7 units.
- 2Width: from y = 2 to y = −1 is |2| + |−1| = 3 units.
- 3Perimeter: 7 + 3 + 7 + 3 = 20. Area: 7 × 3 = 21.

Students solve problems by plotting points on the coordinate plane, such as finding the perimeter or area of a rectangle, finding its side lengths, or finding a missing fourth vertex. The sides of the rectangles are parallel to the axes.
Side lengths come from distances between points with the same x- or y-coordinate.
Official benchmarkSolve mathematical and real-world problems by plotting points on a coordinate plane, including finding the perimeter or area of a rectangle.
On the FAST test: part of the Grade 6 reporting category Geometric Reasoning, Data Analysis, and Probability, which is about 25–36% of the test.
Worked Example 1
Worked Example 2
The points are on opposite sides of the y-axis: 3 + 4 = 7 units.
Area is in square units: 21 square units.
Plot the points on graph paper and connect them in order before calculating. A sketch catches most mistakes.
