In Grade 5, students multiply and divide decimals to the tenths by 0.1 and 0.01, such as 45.6 × 0.1 or 3.2 ÷ 0.01.
The key idea: multiplying by 0.1 is the same as dividing by 10, so each digit moves one place to the right. Dividing by 0.1 is the same as multiplying by 10, so each digit moves one place to the left. With 0.01, digits move two places.
Official benchmarkMultiply and divide a multi-digit number with decimals to the tenths by one-tenth and one-hundredth with procedural reliability.
On the FAST test: part of the Grade 5 reporting category Number Sense and Operations with Fractions and Decimals, which is about 23–29% of the test.
Worked Example 1
Worked Example 2
Dividing by a number less than 1 makes the answer bigger. 3.8 ÷ 0.1 = 38 (how many tenths are in 3.8).
0.01 is one hundredth, so digits move two places: 6.5 × 0.01 = 0.065.
Think about money: 0.1 of a dollar is a dime, 0.01 is a penny. How many dimes are in $3.80? 38. That is 3.8 ÷ 0.1.
