Worked Examples

Worked Example 1

Standard Form to Word Form

Answer: three and four hundred five thousandths

Worked Example 2

Writing Expanded Form

6.284
  1. 1Write each digit with its value: 6 ones, 2 tenths, 8 hundredths, 4 thousandths.
  2. 26 + 0.2 + 0.08 + 0.004.
Answer: 6 + 0.2 + 0.08 + 0.004

Common Mistakes to Watch For

Forgetting a zero placeholder

Wrong:five and thirty-six thousandths = 5.36

Thousandths need three decimal places. 36 thousandths is 0.036, so the number is 5.036.

Saying "and" in the wrong place

Wrong:four hundred and five = 400.5

"And" stands only for the decimal point. Four hundred five is 405; four hundred and five tenths is 400.5.

Helpful Math Tip

Say the number out loud. The last word (tenths, hundredths, thousandths) tells you how many digits go after the decimal point.
