What Is Benchmark MA.5.M.1.1?

In Grade 5, students solve multi-step real-world problems that convert units within the same system, such as feet to inches, kilograms to grams, or hours to minutes.

The key idea: converting to a smaller unit gives a bigger number (multiply); converting to a larger unit gives a smaller number (divide).

Official benchmarkSolve multi-step real-world problems that involve converting measurement units to equivalent measurements within a single system of measurement.

On the FAST test: part of the Grade 5 reporting category Geometric Reasoning, Measurement, and Data Analysis and Probability, which is about 23–29% of the test.

Worked Examples

Worked Example 1

Feet and Inches

3 feet 8 inches = ___ inches
  1. 11 foot = 12 inches, so 3 feet = 3 × 12 = 36 inches.
  2. 2Add the extra 8 inches: 36 + 8 = 44.
Answer: 44 inches

Worked Example 2

A Multi-Step Problem

A ribbon is 4 yards long. It is cut into 6 equal pieces. How many feet long is each piece?
  1. 1Convert: 4 yards = 4 × 3 = 12 feet.
  2. 2Divide: 12 ÷ 6 = 2 feet.
Answer: 2 feet

Common Mistakes to Watch For

Dividing when you should multiply

Wrong:5 feet = 512 inches

Inches are smaller than feet, so there are more of them: 5 × 12 = 60 inches.

Using 100 for time

Wrong:4 hours 15 minutes = 415 minutes

An hour has 60 minutes: 4 × 60 + 15 = 255 minutes.

Helpful Math Tip

Ask "is the new unit bigger or smaller?" Smaller units → more of them → multiply. Bigger units → fewer of them → divide.
