Worked Examples

Worked Example 1

Using a Fact You Know

12 × 7
  1. 1Split 12 into 10 + 2.
  2. 210 × 7 = 70 and 2 × 7 = 14
  3. 370 + 14 = 84
Answer: 84

Worked Example 2

Division From Multiplication

132 ÷ 11
  1. 1Think: 11 times what is 132?
  2. 211 × 12 = 132
Answer: 12

Common Mistakes to Watch For

Mixing up nearby facts

Wrong:8 × 7 = 54

8 × 7 = 56. (6 × 9 = 54.) A quick check: 8 × 7 = 8 × 5 + 8 × 2 = 40 + 16 = 56.

Using the wrong factor for a division fact

Wrong:6 × 9 = 54, so 54 ÷ 6 = 8

From 6 × 9 = 54, the division facts are 54 ÷ 6 = 9 and 54 ÷ 9 = 6.

Helpful Math Tip

A few minutes of daily fact practice works better than long sessions. Focus on the facts your child still counts out.
