In our place value system, each place is worth 10 times the place to its right. So when a digit moves one place to the left, its value becomes 10 times as much. When it moves one place to the right, its value becomes 110 as much (divided by 10).
For example, the 4 in 4,000 is worth 10 times as much as the 4 in 400.
Official benchmarkExpress how the value of a digit in a multi-digit whole number changes if the digit moves one place to the left or right.
On the FAST test: part of the Grade 4 reporting category Number Sense and Operations with Whole Numbers, which is about 31–37% of the test.

Worked Example 2
Each place to the left multiplies the value by 10: 300 = 10 × 30.
Moving right divides the value by 10: 8,000 ÷ 10 = 800.
Write a number on a place value chart, then slide one digit left or right and ask, "How many times as much is it worth now?"
