Worked Examples

Worked Example 1

410 + 25100
  1. 1Rewrite 410 as hundredths: 40100
  2. 240100 + 25100 = 65100
Answer: 65100

Worked Example 2

A Sum Greater Than One

710 + 45100
  1. 1710 = 70100
  2. 270100 + 45100 = 115100
Answer: 115100

Common Mistakes to Watch For

Adding numerators and denominators

Wrong:410 + 25100 = 29110

Make the denominators the same first: 40100 + 25100 = 65100.

Adding numerators without rewriting the tenths

Wrong:410 + 25100 = 29100

4 tenths is 40 hundredths, not 4 hundredths: 40100 + 25100 = 65100.

Helpful Math Tip

Use money: tenths are dimes and hundredths are pennies. 4 dimes and 25 pennies is 65 cents, or 65100 of a dollar.
