Worked Examples

Worked Example 1

Times a Multiple of 10

8 × 40
  1. 140 is 4 tens.
  2. 28 × 4 tens = 32 tens
  3. 332 tens is 320.
Answer: 320

Worked Example 2

Times a Multiple of 100

7 × 500
  1. 1500 is 5 hundreds.
  2. 27 × 5 hundreds = 35 hundreds
  3. 335 hundreds is 3,500.
Answer: 3,500

Common Mistakes to Watch For

Dropping the zero

Wrong:5 × 60 = 30

5 × 6 tens = 30 tens, and 30 tens is 300.

Adding an extra zero when the basic fact ends in zero

Wrong:5 × 80 = 4,000

5 × 8 = 40, so 5 × 8 tens = 40 tens = 400.

Helpful Math Tip

Say it in units: "4 times 3 hundreds is 12 hundreds." Naming the unit (tens or hundreds) keeps the zeros correct.
