Students find the area of a rectangle with whole-number side lengths using a visual model (unit squares or an array) and the multiplication formula: area = length × width.
Each row of unit squares has as many squares as the length, and there are as many rows as the width. That is why multiplying works. Answers use square units.
Official benchmarkFind the area of a rectangle with whole-number side lengths using a visual model and a multiplication formula.
On the FAST test: part of the Grade 3 reporting category Number Sense and Multiplicative Reasoning, which is about 23–29% of the test.

Worked Example 2
Area is rows times squares in each row: 6 × 4 = 24 square inches.
That is the distance around. Area is 2 × 9 = 18 square units.
Draw the rectangle on grid paper and count a few rows to see why length × width works, then use the formula.
