What Is Benchmark MA.3.GR.1.2?

A quadrilateral is a closed figure with 4 straight sides. Students identify and draw parallelograms, rhombuses (rhombi), rectangles, squares, and trapezoids based on their defining attributes, and tell them apart from non-examples.

Florida's B.E.S.T. glossary defines a trapezoid as a quadrilateral with at least one pair of parallel sides. A parallelogram has two pairs of parallel sides, a rhombus has 4 equal sides, a rectangle has 4 right angles, and a square has both.

Official benchmarkIdentify and draw quadrilaterals based on their defining attributes. Quadrilaterals include parallelograms, rhombi, rectangles, squares and trapezoids.

On the FAST test: part of the Grade 3 reporting category Geometric Reasoning, Measurement, and Data Analysis and Probability, which is about 23–29% of the test.

Worked Examples

Worked Example 1

Name the Quadrilateral

A quadrilateral has 4 equal sides but no right angles. What is it?
  1. 14 equal sides means it is a rhombus.
  2. 2It has no right angles, so it is not a square.
Answer: A rhombus

Worked Example 2

Is a Square a Rhombus?

Is every square also a rhombus?
  1. 1A rhombus is a quadrilateral with 4 equal sides.
  2. 2A square has 4 equal sides (and also 4 right angles).
Answer: Yes, every square is a rhombus

Common Mistakes to Watch For

Thinking a square is not a rectangle

Wrong:A square can't be a rectangle because its sides are all the same length.

A rectangle needs 4 right angles. A square has 4 right angles, so it is a special rectangle.

Using a narrow definition of trapezoid

Wrong:A parallelogram can't be a trapezoid.

In Florida's B.E.S.T. glossary, a trapezoid has at least one pair of parallel sides. A parallelogram has two pairs, so it is also a trapezoid.

Helpful Math Tip

Draw shapes on grid paper and sort them into a chart. Ask your child to name every category each shape belongs to.
