What Is Benchmark MA.3.GR.1.1?

Students describe and draw points, lines, line segments, rays, and lines that are intersecting, perpendicular, or parallel, and find them in shapes and in the real world.

A line goes on forever in both directions. A line segment has two endpoints. A ray has one endpoint and goes on forever in one direction. Parallel lines never meet. Perpendicular lines meet at square corners (right angles).

Official benchmarkDescribe and draw points, lines, line segments, rays, intersecting lines, perpendicular lines and parallel lines. Identify these in two-dimensional figures.

On the FAST test: part of the Grade 3 reporting category Geometric Reasoning, Measurement, and Data Analysis and Probability, which is about 23–29% of the test.

Worked Examples

Worked Example 1

Name the Figure

A straight path has one endpoint and goes on forever in one direction. What is it?
  1. 1A line has no endpoints. A line segment has two.
  2. 2A figure with exactly one endpoint is a ray.
Answer: A ray

Worked Example 2

Parallel or Perpendicular?

In a rectangle, how are the two long sides related? How are two sides that meet at a corner related?
  1. 1The two long sides go the same direction and never meet, so they are parallel.
  2. 2Two sides that meet at a corner make a square corner, so they are perpendicular.
Answer: Long sides: parallel. Sides meeting at a corner: perpendicular.

Common Mistakes to Watch For

Calling a line segment a line

Wrong:The side of a triangle is a line.

A side of a triangle has two endpoints, so it is a line segment. A line goes on forever.

Calling all crossing lines perpendicular

Wrong:Lines that cross like an X are always perpendicular.

Perpendicular lines meet at square corners. Lines that cross at other angles are intersecting, but not perpendicular.

Helpful Math Tip

Hunt for these figures at home: the edges of a table (line segments), railroad tracks or notebook lines (parallel), and the corner of a window (perpendicular).
