What Is Benchmark MA.3.AR.2.1?

Every division problem can be rewritten as a multiplication problem with a missing factor. For example, 56 ÷ 7 = ? can be restated as 7 × ? = 56, and since 7 × 8 = 56, the quotient is 8.

The missing factor can be shown with any symbol or a letter. Factors are up to 12.

Official benchmarkRestate a division problem as a missing factor problem using the relationship between multiplication and division.

On the FAST test: part of the Grade 3 reporting category Number Sense and Multiplicative Reasoning, which is about 23–29% of the test.

Worked Examples

Worked Example 1

Restate and Solve

Restate 48 ÷ 6 = ? as a missing factor problem, then solve.
  1. 1Division asks: 6 times what number is 48?
  2. 2Write it as 6 × ? = 48.
  3. 36 × 8 = 48, so ? = 8.
Answer: 6 × ? = 48; 48 ÷ 6 = 8

Worked Example 2

Using a Letter

Restate 81 ÷ 9 = n as a missing factor problem, then solve.
  1. 1Write it as 9 × n = 81.
  2. 29 × 9 = 81, so n = 9.
Answer: 9 × n = 81; n = 9

Common Mistakes to Watch For

Multiplying the total by the divisor

Wrong:35 ÷ 5 = ? becomes 35 × 5 = ?

The total (35) is the product. Write 5 × ? = 35, so ? = 7.

Finding a factor but reporting the wrong one

Wrong:42 ÷ 6 = ?: 6 × 7 = 42, so the answer is 6.

The missing factor is the answer: 6 × ? = 42, so ? = 7 and 42 ÷ 6 = 7.

Helpful Math Tip

When your child is stuck on a division fact, ask, "What times the divisor gives you the total?" Multiplication facts they know become division facts.
