What Is Benchmark MA.2.NSO.2.2?

Students find the number that is 10 more, 10 less, 100 more, or 100 less than a three-digit number, using place value instead of counting one by one.

Adding or taking away 10 changes the tens digit. Adding or taking away 100 changes the hundreds digit. The other digits stay the same, except when the tens go past 9 or below 0.

Official benchmarkIdentify the number that is ten more, ten less, one hundred more and one hundred less than a given three-digit number.

How it is tested: Grade 2 students take FAST Star Math, Florida's math test for Kindergarten through Grade 2.

Common Mistakes to Watch For

Changing the ones digit

Wrong:10 more than 352 is 353

10 more changes the tens digit, not the ones: 10 more than 352 is 362.

Forgetting to regroup when the tens digit is 9

Wrong:10 more than 495 is 405

9 tens + 1 ten = 10 tens, which is 1 more hundred. 10 more than 495 is 505.

Helpful Math Tip

Count by tens or hundreds from any number, not just from zero: 238, 248, 258, ... or 238, 338, 438, ... Ask your child which digit is changing and why.
