Grade 2 students explore adding and subtracting with numbers up to 1,000. This is an exploration benchmark: the focus is on understanding, using base-ten blocks, number lines, drawings, and place value.
Students compose and decompose hundreds, tens, and ones as needed. For example, 10 tens can be traded for 1 hundred, and 1 hundred can be broken into 10 tens.
Official benchmarkExplore the addition of two whole numbers with sums up to 1,000. Explore the subtraction of a whole number from a whole number, each no larger than 1,000.
How it is tested: Grade 2 students take FAST Star Math, Florida's math test for Kindergarten through Grade 2.
Worked Example 1
Worked Example 2
5 tens + 7 tens = 12 tens, which is 1 hundred and 2 tens. 256 + 371 = 627.
Regroup: 402 is 3 hundreds, 9 tens, and 12 ones. 12 − 5 = 7 ones, 9 − 3 = 6 tens, 3 − 1 = 2 hundreds. 402 − 135 = 267.
Use a number line for subtraction near a hundred. For 1,000 − 17, jump back 10 to 990 and then 7 more to 983.
