Worked Examples

Worked Example 1

One-Step Problem

Kai ran 45 meters, then ran 30 more meters. How far did he run in all?
  1. 1Join the two distances: 45 + 30 = 75
Answer: 75 meters

Worked Example 2

Two-Step Problem

A green snake is 36 inches long. A brown snake is 15 inches longer than the green snake. How long are the two snakes together?
  1. 1Step 1: find the brown snake's length. 36 + 15 = 51
  2. 2Step 2: add both lengths. 36 + 51 = 87
Answer: 87 inches

Common Mistakes to Watch For

Stopping after the first step

Wrong:The two snakes are 51 inches long together.

51 inches is only the brown snake. Add both snakes: 36 + 51 = 87 inches.

Leaving off the unit

Wrong:87

Write what the number measures: 87 inches.

Helpful Math Tip

Draw a simple bar for each length (a "bar model") and label it. Seeing the lengths side by side shows whether to add or subtract.
