Students find the perimeter of triangles, rectangles, squares, and pentagons with whole-number side lengths by adding the lengths of all the sides. Perimeters are 100 units or less.
No formula is needed in Grade 2. Students can add the sides in any order to make it easier, and answers include the unit, such as inches or meters.
Official benchmarkFind the perimeter of a polygon with whole-number side lengths. Polygons are limited to triangles, rectangles, squares and pentagons.
How it is tested: Grade 2 students take FAST Star Math, Florida's math test for Kindergarten through Grade 2.
Worked Example 1
Worked Example 2
Opposite sides of a rectangle are the same length. Add all four sides: 12 + 5 + 12 + 5 = 34 meters.
Say what the number measures: 34 meters.
Have your child measure the sides of a book or a placemat with a ruler, then add the sides to find the perimeter.
Help your child build math confidence with original interactive questions aligned with Florida's B.E.S.T. Mathematics Standards.
