Students identify and draw triangles, rectangles, squares, pentagons, hexagons, and octagons based on their defining attributes, such as the number of sides and vertices (corners). They use rulers and straight edges to draw.
Defining attributes are what make a shape that shape. Color, size, and which way the shape is turned do not matter.
Official benchmarkIdentify and draw two-dimensional figures based on their defining attributes. Figures are limited to triangles, rectangles, squares, pentagons, hexagons and octagons.
How it is tested: Grade 2 students take FAST Star Math, Florida's math test for Kindergarten through Grade 2.
Worked Example 1
Worked Example 2
Any closed shape with 3 straight sides is a triangle, no matter how it is turned.
A hexagon is any closed shape with 6 straight sides. The sides do not need to be the same length.
Go on a shape hunt: stop signs (octagons), honeycombs (hexagons), doors (rectangles). Ask your child how they know, by counting sides and corners.
Help your child build math confidence with original interactive questions aligned with Florida's B.E.S.T. Mathematics Standards.
