Common Mistakes to Watch For

Comparing the ones first

Wrong:29 > 31 because 9 > 1

Compare the tens first: 2 tens is less than 3 tens, so 29 < 31.

Pointing the symbol the wrong way

Wrong:52 < 25

The open side faces the bigger number: 52 > 25.

Helpful Math Tip

Play a quick card game: each person flips two digit cards to make a number, and the bigger number wins. Say it aloud: "64 is greater than 46."
