Expanded form shows the value of each digit: the 7 in 75 means 7 tens, or 70.

Worked Examples

Worked Example 1

Writing Expanded Form

Write 75 in expanded form.
  1. 1The 7 is in the tens place, so it means 70.
  2. 2The 5 is in the ones place, so it means 5.
Answer: 70 + 5

Worked Example 2

Reading Word Form

Write forty-eight as a number and in expanded form.
  1. 1Forty is 40 and eight is 8.
  2. 240 + 8 = 48
Answer: 48; 40 + 8

Common Mistakes to Watch For

Writing every word as its own number

Wrong:seventy-five = 705

Seventy-five is 7 tens and 5 ones: 75.

Writing digits instead of their values in expanded form

Wrong:75 = 7 + 5

The 7 means 7 tens, so 75 = 70 + 5.

Helpful Math Tip

Point to numbers you see around you (prices, page numbers, house numbers) and ask your child to read them and say how many tens and ones.
