Children tell and write time to the hour and half hour on analog and digital clocks. They do not use a.m. or p.m. yet.
At an o'clock time, the minute hand points to the 12. At half past, the minute hand points to the 6 and the hour hand is halfway between two numbers, just like a circle cut in half.
Official benchmarkUsing analog and digital clocks, tell and write time in hours and half-hours.
How it is tested: Grade 1 students take FAST Star Math, Florida's math test for Kindergarten through Grade 2.
Worked Example 1
Worked Example 2
The hour hand has not reached 4 yet, so it is still the 3 o'clock hour: 3:30.
Half past is 30 minutes after the hour: 3:30.
Point out the clock at meals and bedtime, especially at half past. Ask, "Where is the hour hand? Where is the minute hand?"
