What Is Benchmark MA.1.FR.1.1?

Children split circles and rectangles into 2 or 4 equal-sized parts and name the parts: halves and fourths (also called quarters).

In Grade 1, children use words only. Writing fractions with numbers starts in Grade 3. Parts must be the same size to be called halves or fourths.

Official benchmarkPartition circles and rectangles into two and four equal-sized parts. Name the parts of the whole using appropriate language including halves or fourths.

How it is tested: Grade 1 students take FAST Star Math, Florida's math test for Kindergarten through Grade 2.

Worked Examples

Worked Example 1

Naming Fourths

A round pizza is cut into 4 equal slices. What is each slice called?
  1. 1The pizza has 4 equal parts.
  2. 2Each part is one fourth (one quarter) of the pizza.
Answer: One fourth (one quarter)

Worked Example 2

Equal or Not?

A sandwich is cut into 2 pieces. One piece is big and one is small. Is it cut in halves?
  1. 1Halves must be the same size.
  2. 2These pieces are not the same size.
Answer: No

Common Mistakes to Watch For

Calling unequal parts halves

Wrong:A cookie broken into a big piece and a small piece is cut in half.

Halves must be the same size. If one piece is bigger, the pieces are not halves.

Thinking a fourth is bigger than a half

Wrong:One fourth is bigger than one half because 4 is more than 2.

Cutting the same shape into more pieces makes each piece smaller. One half is bigger than one fourth.

Helpful Math Tip

Share snacks fairly: cut a sandwich or a tortilla into halves and fourths, and ask, "Are the pieces the same size?"
