Children look at real objects and name the parts that look like flat shapes (semi-circles, triangles, rectangles, squares, hexagons) or solid shapes (spheres, cubes, rectangular prisms, cones, cylinders).
For example, a tissue box is shaped like a rectangular prism, and the roof on a drawing of a house is a triangle.
Official benchmarkGiven a real-world object, identify parts that are modeled by two- and three-dimensional figures. Figures are limited to semi-circles, triangles, rectangles, squares and hexagons, spheres, cubes, rectangular prisms, cones and cylinders.
How it is tested: Grade 1 students take FAST Star Math, Florida's math test for Kindergarten through Grade 2.
Worked Example 1
Worked Example 2
A ball is a solid: a sphere.
Name the shape of the part: the roof is a triangle.
On a walk, play "I spy a shape": "I spy a cylinder" (a trash can) or "I spy a cone" (a traffic cone).
