Children identify, compare, and sort flat (two-dimensional) shapes and solid (three-dimensional) shapes by their defining attributes, like the number of sides, vertices (corners), faces, and edges, and whether sides are straight or curved.
Flat shapes: circles, semi-circles, triangles, rectangles, squares, trapezoids, and hexagons. Solid shapes: spheres, cubes, rectangular prisms, cones, and cylinders. Flat and solid shapes are sorted separately.
Official benchmarkIdentify, compare and sort two- and three-dimensional figures based on their defining attributes. Figures are limited to circles, semi-circles, triangles, rectangles, squares, trapezoids, hexagons, spheres, cubes, rectangular prisms, cones and cylinders.
How it is tested: Grade 1 students take FAST Star Math, Florida's math test for Kindergarten through Grade 2.

Worked Example 2
Turning a shape doesn't change it. It still has 4 equal sides and 4 square corners, so it is still a square.
A ball is a solid shape: a sphere. A circle is flat.
Go on a shape hunt around the house and sort what you find into groups. Ask your child to explain the rule for each group.
Help your child build math confidence with original interactive questions aligned with Florida's B.E.S.T. Mathematics Standards.
