What Is Benchmark MA.6.NSO.4.2?

Students multiply and divide integers with procedural fluency. If the signs are the same, the product or quotient is positive. If the signs are different, it is negative.

Integers can be divided as long as the divisor is not zero, and the sign can be placed on the numerator, the denominator, or the whole fraction: −(p ÷ q) = (−p) ÷ q = p ÷ (−q).

Official benchmarkApply and extend previous understandings of operations with whole numbers to multiply and divide integers with procedural fluency.

On the FAST test: part of the Grade 6 reporting category Number Sense and Operations, which is about 33–42% of the test.

Worked Examples

Worked Example 1

Different Signs

(−6) × 4
  1. 16 × 4 = 24
  2. 2The signs are different, so the product is negative.
Answer: −24

Worked Example 2

Same Signs

(−48) ÷ (−8)
  1. 148 ÷ 8 = 6
  2. 2The signs are the same, so the quotient is positive.
Answer: 6

Common Mistakes to Watch For

Thinking two negatives make a negative

Wrong:(−3) × (−7) = −21

The signs are the same, so the product is positive: (−3) × (−7) = 21.

Dropping the sign when dividing

Wrong:−36 ÷ 4 = 9

The signs are different, so the quotient is negative: −36 ÷ 4 = −9.

Helpful Math Tip

Find the answer without signs first, then decide the sign as a separate step: same signs positive, different signs negative.
