Students multiply and divide positive fractions and mixed numbers with procedural fluency, connecting visual models, the relationship between multiplication and division, and reciprocals.
To multiply, multiply the numerators and the denominators. To divide, multiply by the reciprocal of the divisor (flip the second fraction). Change mixed numbers to fractions first.
Official benchmarkExtend previous understanding of multiplication and division to compute products and quotients of positive fractions by positive fractions, including mixed numbers, with procedural fluency.
On the FAST test: part of the Grade 6 reporting category Number Sense and Operations, which is about 33–42% of the test.
Worked Example 1
Worked Example 2
Keep the first fraction and use the reciprocal of the divisor: 52 × 43.
Change to fractions first: 32 × 73 = 216 = 312.
Ask what the division means: 212 ÷ 34 asks "how many 34s fit in 212?" A drawing shows the answer is a little more than 3.
